Karen A. Cowles, 78, of Aberdeen, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 6, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 409 2nd Avenue NE, Aberdeen, with Father Michael Griffin as celebrant.

Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Aberdeen.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.  Friends may sign Karen’s online guestbook and also view her service via the live stream service link at www.schriversmemorial.com.

Visitation will be 6-7 p.m., Sunday, at the mortuary, with a liturgical wake service beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation continues one hour before Mass at church on Monday.

Karen A. Engelhart was born July 22, 1939, to Joe and Edith (Hickenbotham) Engelhart in Aberdeen.  She attended Sacred Heart Parochial School and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School.  Following graduation, Karen began working at First National Bank (now U.S. Bank) in Aberdeen.

Karen was united in marriage to John “Jack” Cowles on November 16, 1957, in Aberdeen.  The couple made their home in the Mellette, SD area, where they farmed for many years.  Karen continued working at U.S. Bank for over 30 years before retiring.  She and Jack moved to Aberdeen in 2004 and continued to reside there until the time of her death.

Karen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen.  She was also an avid card player and enjoyed many card games at the Aberdeen Area Senior Center.

Blessed to have shared in Karen’s life is her husband of almost 60 years, John “Jack” Cowles of Aberdeen; daughter-in-law, Jannelle Cowles (Bill) Nelson of Redfield, SD; two granddaughters, Jennifer Cowles, and her son, Trey, of Aberdeen and Cindy (T.J.) Genzler, and their daughters, Audra, Autumn and Aubrie of Garretson, SD; one brother, Jim (Susan) Engelhart of Rosemount, MN; eight sisters:  Marge Zerr of Fargo, ND, Pat Silvernail of Blue Springs, MO, Judy (Andre) Fontenelle of Aberdeen, Nancy (Michael) Hatzenbeller of Aberdeen, Kathy (David) Bormes of Downers Grove, IL, Mary DeVaan of Minnetonka, MN, Janet (Stuart) Barton of Aberdeen and Jean (Mike) Weston of Lakeville, MN; one brother-in-law:  Richard (Janice) Cowles of Bonners Ferry, ID; one sister-in-law, Carol Thies of Selby, SD; and many nieces and nephews.   

Karen was preceded in death by her children, Tom and Paula; her parents, Joe and Edith; one brother, Joe Engelhart; five brothers-in-law:  Duane Zerr, Gary Silvernail, Larry Thies, Fred Cowles and Ray Styles; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Styles and Kay Cowles.
