Helen Knecht Obituary

Helen Josephine Knecht, 92, of Houghton, SD, passed away Friday, February 23, 2018 at the Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, SD.

Helen’s wishes were to be cremated.  Memorial services will take place in July of 2018, with burial following at the Houghton Cemetery.

Helen Josephine Zick was born October 2, 1925 to Alfred and Esther (Larscheid) Zick in Aberdeen, SD.  She grew up on her parent’s farm near Ordway, SD and attended school in Aberdeen, where she graduated from Aberdeen Central High School.

Helen married Howard Charles Knecht on June 11, 1947, in Aberdeen.  To them were born three children:  Randy (Debbie) Knecht of Houghton, SD, Nannette (Ronald) Rankin of North Platte, NE and Connie Knecht of Sisseton, SD.  Helen and Howard were married 62 years and together built a successful family farming operation, which they were very proud of.

Helen enjoyed working in her yard, gardening, canning, and drying apples and pears for the grandkids that looked forward to getting them every Christmas. She loved to dance, bowl, golf, spend weekends at the lake with family, and watch her grandchildren participate in their sporting events.  Helen was a life-long Minnesota Twins and Phoenix Suns fan.  She spent her winters in Arizona for 42 years, where she golfed with and entertained many special friends.

In addition to her children and their spouses, Helen is survived by five grandchildren: Troy (Katrina) Knecht, Justin (Mistey) Knecht, Tanner (Samantha) Knecht, Jared Rankin, and Jennifer (Dan) Morrow; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Arlene (Morris) Sporer.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her brother, Donald Zick.

Memorials will be donated to the Houghton Cemetery Fund.
