Harold James Schaunaman, 91, of Aberdeen, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2017, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 23, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Westport, SD, with Father Jordan Samson as celebrant.

Burial, with military rites, will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 6-7 p.m., Sunday, at the mortuary followed by a liturgical wake service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation continues one hour before Mass at the church on Monday.

    Harold James Schaunaman was born March 1, 1926, at home in rural Aberdeen, to Henry R. and Cecelia (Wullweber) Schaunaman.  He attended school in Lincoln Township and Westport, graduating from Westport High School as Valedictorian of the Class of 1944.  Following graduation, Harold began his life-long farming career.  During that time, in addition to working on the farm, he also played basketball, bowled, pitched horseshoes, was involved in amateur boxing and played amateur baseball, where he was named All State in 1948.

    Harold entered the U.S. Army in January 1951 and served his country until the time of his honorable discharge in January 1953.  He then returned to Westport and continued farming.

    Harold was united in marriage to Pauline Huettl on May 28, 1953, in Westport.  The couple settled east of Westport where they resided for 58 years and raised their seven children. Harold was passionate about agriculture and politics.  He was instrumental in promoting tax reform and helped end personal property taxes.  He also served on the Garland Township Board until 2006, was awarded the SD Farmers Union Award for Meritorious Service in 2004, and was a member of and actively promoted NFO. In 1991, Harold retired from farming.  Even though he moved to Aberdeen in February of 2013, his heart truly never left the farm.  He continued to reside in Aberdeen until the time of his death.

    Blessed to have shared in Harold’s life is his wife of over 64 years, Pauline of Aberdeen; seven children:  Janet (Ken) Hollister of Westport, Lora A. Schaunaman (Brian Cleberg-Special Friend) of Aberdeen, Jim (Wendy) Schaunaman of Aberdeen, Karen (Melvin) Schanzenbach of Wetonka, SD, Kevin R. Schaunaman of Aberdeen, Paula (Eric) Arnold of Willmar, MN and Carol (Chad) Forkrud of Clara City, MN; 12 grandchildren:  Alicia (Joe) Kluver, Matthew Hollister, Amanda Hollister, Shannon (Brian) Petersen, Sarah (Brian) Sealock, Austin Schanzenbach, Rachel Arnold, Rebekah Arnold, Hannah Arnold, Tyler Moffenbier, Amber Mattson and Andrew Mattson; nine great-grandchildren:  Elliot Petersen, Parker Petersen, Riley Sealock, Regan Sealock and Brandt Sealock, Betty Murray, Ariella Mattson, Aaliyah Mattson and Isaiah Mattson; two brothers:  Don (Hazel) Schaunaman and Lyle (Trudy) Schaunaman, both of Aberdeen; one sister, Ila (Ardel) Ronning of Billings, MT; brother-in-law, Lyle (Virginia) Morrison of Aberdeen; and two sisters-in-law:  Irene Schaunaman and Viola Pence, both of Aberdeen; as well as many nieces and nephews.

    Harold is preceded in death by his parents, Henry & Cecelia; seven brothers:  George, Irl, Leon, Edwin, Albert, Hank and Vern Schaunaman; two sisters:  Anita Serna and Ruth Morrison; one great-grandson, William Petersen; two brothers-in-law: Mike Serna and Bennie Pence; and six sisters-in-law: Virginia Schaunaman, Peggy Schaunaman, Doris Schaunaman, Ida Schaunaman, Bertie Schaunaman and Ellen Schaunaman.
