Gottlieb Geist Jr., 94, of Aberdeen, went home to his Lord and Savior on November 24, 2017.

His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 30, 2017, at Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, with Pastor Lou Whitmer, of North Highland United Methodist Church, officiating.

A luncheon and time of fellowship will immediately follow the service at Schriver’s Memorial Fellowship Center.

Interment, with military rites being conducted by John J. Peters American Legion Post #159 of Hoven, SD, will take place at 2:30 p.m. at German Zion Congregational Cemetery in Tolstoy, SD.

Visitation at the mortuary will be 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, and one hour before the service on Thursday.

Gottlieb “GG” Geist Jr. was born March 3, 1923, on the family farm 12 miles NE of Tolstoy, in Edmunds County, to Gottlieb Sr. and Rosina (Metzger) Geist.  He was a part of a large family of brothers and sisters.  Gottlieb worked on the family farm near Tolstoy harvesting crops and tending livestock.  He attended Cloyd Valley rural school and then attended high school in Bowdle, SD.  

Gottlieb served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1944-1946 as a Corporal on a floating Aircraft Repair Unit in the Asiatic Pacific working on C-54s and B-29s, inspecting and repairing wooden parts as an airplane woodworker.  He was honorably discharged on August 14, 1946 with the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan).

Gottlieb worked in a variety of skilled labor positions as a carpenter and mason.  He was a part of the construction crew that built the concrete grain silos in Aberdeen.  Gottlieb also owned and operated a stucco business that worked on many buildings in Aberdeen and the surrounding area.  He later owned and operated Geist Sanitation before he retired.

Gottlieb was united in marriage to Beverly Jane Coyle-Johnson in Ipswich, SD, in 1996.  After he retired, GG and Bev took many bus trips, enjoying new places together with new and old friends.  Mobridge was always a favorite destination, whether fishing or just enjoying the slot machines.  At home, Gottlieb loved sitting in his chair, while his “Baby” read in hers, watching the news and critiquing CNN or eating a bowl of ice cream while “coaching“ the Twins baseball game.

Gottlieb will be remembered as a loving husband and a proud and caring father and grandfather.  He had a unique wit and keen sense of humor throughout his life.  Whether it was getting a chuckle out of the daily comics or watching his favorite shows, Gottlieb loved life and he loved to laugh.

Gottlieb is survived by the love of his life, Beverly Geist of Aberdeen; two sons, Dean (Rena) Geist of Casper, WY and Greg (Sherri) Geist of Eugene, OR; along with four grandchildren.  Also surviving, and blessed to have shared his life, are Bev’s five children: David (Kathleen) Johnson, Kitty (John) Walker, Peggy (Tom) Eilers, Larry (Janene) Johnson and Jim (Linda) Johnson. And so, he became “Grandpa GG” to many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gottlieb was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers, six sisters and one grandson.
