Our mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Brandner, was born April 21, 1928, to John and Margaret (Seiler) Schatz.  Mom was the last of nine siblings. Their farmstead was located southeast of Zeeland North Dakota.

Betty met the love of her life, Vincent Brandner, at a dance at Hague, North Dakota. They were married December 30, 1947, and moved to a farm southeast of Leola, South Dakota in the spring of 1948.

Vince and Betty had nine children:  Judy (Charles) Lapka, James (Carol) Brandner, Janet (Gerald) Noble, Daniel (died at birth), Cynthia (Jeff) Lilla, Gregory (Cathy) Brandner, Vincent (Denise) Brandner, Kathleen (Doug) Jaton and Michelle (Mark) Weber. There are 20 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Mom loved her family.  She was always there in times of need and times of happiness. The grandchildren loved her chocolate chip cookies, and Grandma’s candy bowl was always filled.  Mom and Dad loved to waltz and polka and could be found at many dances in their early years.  Later in life, they traveled to Canada and did a fall leaf tour in New England, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Being very devoted to her church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Mom taught CCD, belonged to the Ladies Aid Group 5, and was a Eucharist Minister. Her rosary was a very important part of her life and brought great comfort to her at the end of her life.

Mom spent her final eight years in the Avera Mother Joseph Manor Retirement Community.  When you walked into the lobby, you would always see a white-haired lady sitting there, playing cards … that was Mom. Her favorite TV shows were “The Price Is Right” and “Dr Phil”. If any activities were scheduled, Mom was usually there.

Mom is also survived by one sister, Rose Mitzel; and one brother, John Schatz.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Vincent; her parents; five sisters: Sr. Rose, Julia Mathern, Mary Kramer, Christine Meier and Margaret Schatz; and one brother, Eugene Schatz.
