Douglas Joe Westra

Douglas Joe Westra, age 68, from Montevideo MN, and formerly from Aberdeen SD, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at the Select Specialty Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD, after a two-month illness.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 10, 2018, at Schriver's Memorial Fellowship Center, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen.

Doug was born on January 3, 1950 in Sioux Falls SD to Andrew and Florence Westra. The family lived in Sioux Falls SD and Edina MN before moving to Aberdeen SD in 1959, when his family bought their Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store.

Doug graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1968 and attended Northern State University before beginning his long career with Coast-to-Coast, working alongside his family in the Aberdeen Store, and later as both a District Manager and store owner with his wife Glenna. While in the capacity of District Manager in Oregon, he met and married Glenna on March 17, 1979. Later in his career, he transitioned over to True Value Hardware as a Paint Consultant, and retired from that position in 2011. Doug and Glenna had lived in Eugene Oregon for the past several years, and in March 2018, they relocated to Montevideo MN to be closer to their family.

Doug loved living in South Dakota where hunting and fishing were his favorite ways to spend time with his family and friends. He was a passionate sports fan, especially loyal to the Oregon Ducks and Minnesota Vikings football teams.

Doug is survived by his wife Glenna, Montevideo MN, son Andrew Westra and wife Drea, grandsons Gunner and Gauge, Watson MN, son Matthew Westra, Missoula MT, brother Richard Westra and wife Ginger, Aberdeen, SD, sister Beth Mills and husband Steven, Sioux Falls, SD, sister and brother in law, Donna and Toby Pierce, Eugene OR, his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, special family friend Christine McKee, Eugene OR, and his life-time friends from Aberdeen.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Florence Westra, 2 brothers, Dwayne and Charles Westra and his nephew, Jeffrey Westra.

We are heartbroken and will miss Doug's physical presence in our lives. He was a kind-hearted, gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor and a strong, courageous spirit. He inspired us all and the genuine love he had for his family and friends will fill our hearts forever.
