Derald Otto Kern, 86, of Aberdeen, and formerly of Faulkton, SD, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2018 at ManorCare Health Services in Aberdeen.

His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 23, 2018 at the Faulkton United Methodist Church, 1011 St. John Street, Faulkton, with Pastor Bill Hoffman officiating.

Burial will follow at the Faulkton Cemetery.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.  No visitation will take place at the mortuary.

Derald Otto Kern was born July 4, 1931 to Otto and Katharine (Anderson) Kern in Faulk County.  He attended grade school in Faulk County and graduated from Faulkton High School in 1949 before attending two years of college at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Derald was united in marriage to Leona Stoecker on February 16, 1958.  They made their home on the Kern farm, where he farmed and ranched.  In 1980, Derald also began working as a Watkins distributor, which he continued to do until November 2015, when he moved into ManorCare Health Services in Aberdeen.  Derald and Leona raised four children and shared over 58 years of marriage before she passed away on May 8, 2016.  Derald continued to reside in Aberdeen until the time of his death.

Derald was a member of the Faulkton United Methodist Church and Faulkton Masonic Lodge #95 A.F. & A.M.  In his free time he enjoyed reading and visiting with family and friends.

Derald’s life will be cherished by his children:  David of Sioux Falls, SD, Diana (Ralph Tarrell) of Colome, SD, Darwin (Kyra) of Aberdeen, and Daniel of Faulkton; five grandchildren:  Heather (Josh) Kitzan, Paul Jons, Curt Jons, Coral (Joey) Simon, and Hunter Kern; four great-grandchildren:  Isabella and Tristine Simon and Isen and Elizabeth Kitzan; and one sister, Donna Lee (Marvin) White of Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Leona.

Casketbearers will be his three grandsons:  Paul Jons, Curt Jons, and Hunter Kern; and three nephews:  Kyle White, Jeff Stoecker, and Perry Stoecker.

Honorary Casketbearers will be Jeff Grinner, Chad Hauge, and Ralph Tarrell.
