Catherine “Cathy” Alice Schatz, of Aberdeen, passed away on her 81st birthday, Thursday, June 20, 2019, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 27, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 3rdAvenue SE, Aberdeen, with Father Patrick Grode as celebrant and Father David Janes con-celebrating. Because Cathy loved Christmas, please join her family in wearing Christmas ties or jewelry to her service.
Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5thAvenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements. Family and friends may sign Cathy’s online guestbook and also view her service via the live stream service link at www.schriversmemorial.com.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, at the mortuary with a Rosary being said at 6:30 p.m. and a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Visitation continues one hour prior to Mass at the church on Thursday.
Catherine “Cathy” Alice Miller was born June 20, 1938, on the family farm near Wishek, ND to Philip G. and Anna Mary (Baumstarck) Miller. At a young age, Cathy moved with her family to Bismarck, ND, where she attended school and graduated from St. Mary’s High School. She then attended one college course entitled Understanding the Fundamentals of Football.
Cathy was united in marriage to Leo Schatz on November 24, 1958, in Bismarck. They later moved to Aberdeen, SD, where together they raised six children, along with owning and operating Modern Woodman Insurance for many years. Cathy continued to make Aberdeen her home until the time of her death.
Cathy was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen. She was also active in the Jaycettes, the South Dakota Snow Queen Festival and the Germans From Russia Heritage Society. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing Scrabble and Bridge. Cathy also loved music and playing piano, and was an avid reader. She especially enjoyed the time spent having ice-cream with her granddaughters and great-granddaughter.
Blessed to have shared in Cathy’s life is her husband of 60 years, Leo Schatz of Aberdeen; her children: Bob Schatz of Aberdeen, Greg (Deborah) Schatz of Columbia Falls, MT, Don Schatz of Aberdeen, Randy (Tammy) Schatz of Moorhead, MN and Sandra Schatz of Killeen, TX; seven grandchildren: Myssi Joulfs, Thom Schatz, Eryn (James) Dockter, Dustine (Jesse) Fuher, Denae (Michael) Clobes, James Schatz and Ryan Schatz; one great-grandchild, Destiny Fuher; two brothers: Phil (Lotta) Miller and Lee (Linda) Miller, both of Bismarck, ND; and seven sisters: Julie (Joe) Schatz of Mandan, ND, Vivian (Dan) Vetter of Aberdeen, Leona (George) Kuntz of Bismarck, ND, Jo Miller of Aberdeen, Bina (Mark) Krebsbach of Bismarck, ND, Ann (Al) Nagel of Aberdeen and Donna (Marlon) Rahm of Vermillion, SD.
Cathy was preceded in death by her daughter, Bonnie; her parents, Philip G. and Anna Mary; her infant brother, Gabriel; and her infant sister, Isabelle.
