Jeanette M. Harvey was born in Lead, SD, on October 3, 1937. Jeanette was raised by her father, Forest Jerome Harvey, and her grandparents, Jerome and Jonette Harvey.

Jeanette married Raymond J. Black on August 11th, 1957. They made their homes in Rapid City, SD, Colorado Springs Co., and Pierre, SD. Jeanette lived in Aberdeen, SD, in 2017 until her death.

The historic Harvey Ranch, operated by her grandparents south of Lead, became the backdrop for summers filled with work, learning, and growth. It was here that Jeanette, alongside her siblings, Raymond, Jerome, Penny, and her double cousins lived many adventures, ranging from innocent mischief to escapades that, thankfully, are now beyond the reach of the law. Whether humorous or daring, these tales are a testament to the spirited family legacy.

Her love for travel was infectious, a trait she attributed to her grandmother. Jeanette was always ready for a journey. Her adventurous spirit made her an extraordinary companion, leaving behind a legacy of courage, love, and an unquenchable thirst for life’s experiences.

Jeanette’s life was a testament to service. “How can I help?” “What can I do?” These were the questions she lived by, dedicating herself to scouting, sports, costumes, baked goods, PTA, and more. Her energy was boundless, her commitment to action unwavering.

One act of service stands out: when neighbor and fellow South Dakotans of the 200th Engineering Company were called into duty at a time of war, Jeanette spearheaded efforts to send care packages and gifts to the soldiers abroad. Alongside her husband and friends, she adorned Pierre with hundreds of yellow ribbons, symbols of hope and solidarity, maintained until the soldiers’ safe return. Her dedication earned her an award from the South Dakota National Guard, a moment of pride as soldiers rose in ovation to her achievements.

Jeanette’s professional life was as diverse as her volunteerism. She fulfilled her dream of becoming a secretary, serving various organizations with distinction. She proudly served the legislature of South Dakota as a secretary through many administrations.

Jeanette is survived by her children Garry Black of Rapid City, Thomas Black and Brigette Weisenburger of Aberdeen, Gail and Jerry Stoltenberg of rural Stratford; and three grandchildren Christine (fiancé McCaden Anderson), Mackenzie & Dallas Stoltenberg.

As a mother of three, a grandmother of three, and a loving wife, Jeanette’s heart knew no bounds. Though she has passed, preceded by her husband, Raymond J. Black, infant daughter Christine Marie, father, grandparents, and siblings, her legacy endures.
