Aloysius "Al" Zacher

Aloysius “Al” Zacher, 91, Aberdeen, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at his residence.

Al was born March 10, 1920 in Strasburg, ND to John and Johanna (Unser) Zacher.  He attended St. Benedicts School and graduated with the class of 1940.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served for 6 years and was recalled because of the Korean Conflict in 1950.

On January 12, 1952 he was united in marriage to Ann Marie Jaeger in Milwaukee, WI.  They relocated to Aberdeen, SD, in 1955 where he established “Al’s Shoe Service” which he owned and operated for more than 30 years.  In his retirement years he enjoyed working in his yard, bowling, fishing, playing pool with the “Juniors” at the Senior Center, telling old navy stories and bragging about his grandchildren.

Al is survived by his wife, Ann Marie of Aberdeen, SD, two sons, Kelly (Jackie) Zacher of Wahpeton, ND, and Kyle Zacher of Seattle, WA, his granddaughters, Amanda and Kaitlyn Zacher of Wahpeton, ND, Sarah (Nick) Johnson of Big Lake, MN, his grandson, Harley Zacher and friend Megan Wenzel of Sioux Falls, SD, and one great grandson, Tristin Johnson of Big Lake, MN.

Preceding Al in death is one son, Kenneth Zacher, his parents, his sister, Anna Keller and seven brothers, John, William, Eugene, George, Leo, Anton and Joseph.

Memorial service for Al, will be 10:30am Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Ave NW, with Father J. Joseph Holzhauser officiating. 

A time of fellowship and lunch will follow the service at Schriver’s Memorial Fellowship Center. 

In accordance with Al’s wishes, he was cremated and to be buried at Sunset Memorial Gardens following the lunch.  Military rites will be provided by the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 of Aberdeen, SD.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to North Plains Hospice, 305 South State Street, Aberdeen, SD, 57401.
