Brice C. Walker

Brice C. Walker, 84, of Aberdeen died Friday, March 18 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls SD.  His funeral will be Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church  in Aberdeen. Burial services will be at a later date at Riverside Memorial Park in Aberdeen.  Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory , with a prayer service to begin at 6:30 at the funeral home.

Brice was born October 19, 1926 in Aberdeen to Clayton A. Walker and Ruth (Wilson) Walker.  He attended Aberdeen Public Schools and graduated from Central High School in 1944.  During high school he sang in the acapella choir and traveled with their quartet throughout the area.

Immediately after graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army Aircorp and was sent to Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.  After a medical discharge he returned to Aberdeen where he attended Northern State Teachers College.  While in school he started a part time job at the U.S. Post Office, which became his life-time work as a city and rural mail carrier.  Brice retired in 1987 after a 43 year career.

Brice married Coleen Johnston February 20, 1950 in Aberdeen. They enjoyed traveling through every state in the continental U.S., and also traveled abroad in Ireland and England.  They spent 17 years wintering in Arizona.  Brice and Coleen thoroughly enjoyed a Caribbean cruise with his brother Dick and Judy in February, 2011.

His hobbies included golfing, pheasant hunting, fishing, and gardening. With family and friends, his passions also included playing bridge and all kinds of games.  In his later years he enjoyed meeting friends for coffee, playing cards with the Busy Bees Bridge Group, and reading his favorite authors.  Brice and Coleen shared many wonderful times with their Thursday night golf friends.  Their greatest joy and priority was spending time with their kids and grandkids which often included traveling great distances.  Quite times were spent enjoying a cup of coffee and the sun on his screen porch.

Brice was a sensitive, caring, loving man.  Everyone knows and remembers Brice for his humility and unfailing selflessness, always putting the needs of others first. 

He was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church.

Surviving Brice are his wife Coleen and sons John (Kitty) of Rapid City, Jeffrey (Kathryn) of Frankfort, IL, and daughters Janice (Tim) Nelson of Sacred Heart, MN and Julie (Dan) Nikolas  of Aberdeen.  He is also survived by his brother Richard (Judy) of The Villages, FL.  Brice and Coleen were blessed with ten grandchildren; Mathew (Erica) Walker, Heather (Jeremy) Bulthuis, Paul (Danae) Lapka, Jason (Jamie) Walker, Thomas (Mary Sue) Walker, Scott (Naiomi) Walker, Melody Walker, Erin Nikolas, Christopher Nikolas, and Brian (Whitney) Nelson.  Brice is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Brice was preceded in death by his parents.
