Dorothy Agnes Callaghan was born October 7, 1917 on her parent's farm west of Westport, SD. She was the second child of Arthur Patrick and Jeannette (Daly) Callaghan.
Dorothy attended grade school and high school in Westport. She remembered vividly the lack of money during the 30s as their farm had no crops for 3 years.
After graduation she attended business school in Aberdeen, SD for one year to learn bookkeeping.
During the war Dorothy and her sister Marjorie moved to Washington DC to get jobs. There Dorothy reconnected with Richard Sudmeier who she had dated some in Aberdeen. They married on November 28, 1944 at Sacred Heart Church in Westport.
They lived in Washington DC until 1948 and then moved to Duluth, MN where they lived in the Lester Park area for about 30 years. Once some of their kids got older, Dorothy returned to work part time as a bookkeeper.
Dick and Dorothy sold their Duluth house after Dick retired and moved to Rapid City, SD for the winter months. They also bought a home on Lake Ida in Alexandria, MN and spent the summer months there.
Dorothy loved to read and to play bridge. They did a lot of travelling over the years including trips to Alaska, Hawaii, thru the western US, cruises, and trips to Europe.
As the years went on they sold the lake place and lived in Rapid City fulltime.
After her beloved husband Dick passed away May 8, 2010 Dorothy moved to Windmill Ponds Assisted Living in Alexandria, MN. She continued to travel, making a transatlantic cruise in May. And back to Aberdeen and Duluth in the two weeks prior to her death.
Dorothy suffered a devastating stroke and passed away shortly thereafter on October 16, 2011 at Bethany Nursing Home in Alexandria, MN. Blessed be her memory.
