Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy Hedges, 84, of Aberdeen will be 10:30am Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen. Father Edward Pierce and Father Bill Hamak will be officiating. Burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.
Liturgical Wake service 7:00pm Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at the mortuary. Visitation 5-7pm Wednesday at the mortuary and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. Friends may sign her online guest at the bottom of the page.

Dorothy Mertz was born August 24, 1926 to John and Hazel Geno at Aberdeen where she was raised. In 1941, Dorothy was adopted by Roy and Ethel (Kuckelburg) Mertz and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School. She was a volunteer nurses aid at St. Luke's Hospital during WWII.
Dorothy married Charles W. Hedges June 1, 1948 at Aberdeen. They farmed Southwest of Aberdeen raising eight children. They also raised chickens, horses, cattle, pigs and many other animals as well as crops. She had her own business selling eggs, chickens and other dairy products. She later went into the horse business. She was the first person to raise Curly Appaloosas in the United States. Dorothy loved all animals and rescued many cats, dogs and other animals and would give them a home. Dorothy had a big heart and always had room for anyone who didn't have somewhere to go on holidays or any other day of the year.
Dorothy had many hobbies some of which included collecting stamps, angels and clowns. She also enjoyed drawing, painting and sewing.
Surviving Dorothy are, five daughters; Louise (Dick) French of Aberdeen, Laura (Jack) Torrence of Westport, Mary Hedges of Rapid City, Loraine Hawkins of Aberdeen and Melissa (Jeff) Loebs of Aberdeen, three sons; Roy Hedges, Jeff (Janet) Hedges and Joe (Mary) Hedges all of Aberdeen, nineteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her birth parents, adopted parents, her husband, one grandson, one brother, one half-brother and two-half sisters.
