Memorial service for Hugh A. Hay, 77, of Aberdeen will be 11:00am Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, Aberdeen. Hugh's wishes were to be cremated and burial of his cremated remains will be at Riverside Cemetery with Masonic Rites and military rites by the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24.A time of fellowship and luncheon will follow the service at Schriver's Memorial Fellowship Center.
Hugh passed away Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.
Hugh Allan Hay was born September 10, 1933 to Arthur and Bertha (Spiry) Hay in Aberdeen where he was raised and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School. He also attended and graduated from Northern State College in Aberdeen and Northwestern University Business School in Chicago.
Hugh entered the US Navy in 1956 and served in the Korean War. After his honorable discharge in 1957 he returned to Aberdeen and entered the family business, Hay Furniture Company.
Hugh married Patricia L (Braunstein) Ernst March 12, 1966 in Aberdeen. She was instrumental in helping Hugh successfully run the business for many years. At the time of his retirement, the company was over one hundred years old.
Hugh continued working part time for Coach America Shuttle Service where he enjoyed the activity and found many new friendships.
Hugh was an active supporter of the Sertoma Club, the Yelduz Shrine, Aberdeen Chamber Of Commerce, Northern State University and was a proud member and supporter of the Aberdeen Community.
One thing he never missed was daily coffee with his buddies or meeting his friends, who knew it was always 5 o'clock somewhere.
Surviving Hugh are one stepson, Craig (Kathy) Ernst of Aberdeen, one stepdaughter, Nancy Ernst of Aberdeen, two grandchildren, Christopher (Sara) Ernst and Erin (Brett) Hautala, three great-grandchildren, Emma and Claire Ernst and Olivia Hautala and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Pat in April of 2009 and one brother, Bruce Hay.
