Walter A. Brendel

Mass of Christian Burial for Walter A. Brendel, 86, of Aberdeen, will be 2:00 pm., Friday, November 4, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen. Father Shaun Haggerty will be officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military rites by the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 of Aberdeen. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

Liturgical wake service and rosary will be 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 4, 2011, at the mortuary. Visitation will be 5 - 7 pm. Thursday at the mortuary and one hour prior to the Mass on Friday, at the church. Friends may sign his online guest book at the bottom of the page.

Walter passed away Sunday, October 30, 2011 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital. Blessed be his memory.

Walter A Brendel was born February 20, 1925 to Walter E. and Bernadine (Geier) Brendel at Aberdeen where he was raised and attended Aberdeen Public Schools. He worked in the Vancouver Ship Yards in Vancouver, WA for a short time. He entered the US Army Air Force March 24, 1945. He received his honorable discharge December 1, 1946. He returned to Aberdeen and worked for Geffre & Carlson Woodworking for two years.

Walter married Henrietta Isabel Deck January 31, 1948 at Aberdeen. He worked at Nelson Auto Electric for several years. He later started working for the South Dakota Highway Department where he was employed in the sign producing department for over thirty-two years.

Henrietta passed away in August of 1998 and Walter has continued to make Aberdeen his home.

Walter was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Aberdeen Community Theatre and the Aberdeen Humane Society. He enjoyed art work and especially doing Oil Paintings. Surviving Walter are one son, Dennis (Elena) Brendel of Aurora, CO, one brother, George Brendel of Aberdeen and two sisters, Kate Gross of Aberdeen and Beatrice Hawkins of Aberdeen.

Walter was preceded in death his parents, his wife and five sisters, Helen Drager, Eva Nelson, Marie Chandler, Rose Jeanerett and Joann Heilman.
