Marvin Calvin Bonnet, Sr. was born on June 2, 1930 in Leola, SD, to Jacob and Emilia (Bonnet) Bonnet. He attended rural school in Leola until 8th grade.  On a rainy day in 1950, he and a friend moved to Aberdeen, found odd jobs and then enlisted in the Navy.  He served in Korea and Vietnam.

Marvin and his first wife Peggy Murphy were married in 1954 at Yuma, AZ.  They had three daughters: Cindy, DeeAnn, and Nancy.  On October 14, 1971, he married Joan Beverly Vandevere in Long Beach, CA.  They had two sons: Marvin Jr. and Donald.

Upon retiring after 25 years in the Navy, he moved his family to Aberdeen, SD.  They lived there until 1979, when they moved to Leola and bought a hobby farm.  While living in Leola, Marvin worked a little stint as a Leola Police officer and for Hub City, where he retired from in 1992.  After retiring he enjoyed being a farm hand in his spare time working for Harlan Krein in Leola and the Ellwein brothers in Barnard.  He also hauled newspapers for the Aberdeen American News dropping bundles off in Leola and Ashley, ND.

In his free time Marvin Sr. played Pinochle, Bingo, and watched westerns.  He also enjoyed going to many of his Navy ship reunions.  Eating German food was one of his favorite meals and he liked to go to the Flame, where his favorite waitress Maria waited on him so he could give her (and anyone else he met) a bad time.

Grateful for having shared Marvin Sr's life are his children: Marvin (Michelle) Bonnet, Jr. of Aberdeen, Donald Bonnet of Aberdeen, Cindy Simpson of Eureka, CA, DeeAnn (John) Toth of Tulare, CA and Nancy Morales of Eureka, CA; grandchildren: Mikayla Bonnet, Shian Simpson, Rachel Hogan, Terry Bailey and Kandi Havens; great-grandchildren: Logan Gordon and Anthony Simpson; and sisters: Delores Jung of Mina, SD, Betty Huettl of Westport, SD, Vera (Harley) Ehresman of Lodi, CA, and Ginny (Ken) DeWalt of Milwaukee, WI.

Marvin Sr. was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Bonnet; his parents; stepson, Danny Reeves; stepdaughter, Lynda Bailey; six brothers; and one sister.
