LaVerne Irene Barton, 88, of Ellendale, ND and formerly of Aberdeen, passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018, at Prince of Peace Care Center in Ellendale.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 19, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, 121 2nd Street South, Ellendale, with Reverend Paul O.S. Preus officiating.

A luncheon and time of fellowship will immediately follow the service at the church fellowship hall.

Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.  

No visitation will take place prior to the service.

LaVerne Irene Lerew was born in Faulkton, South Dakota on October 30, 1929, to Bert and Marie (Price) Lerew.  She grew up in Faulkton, graduating high school there in 1947 and then graduated from Northern State (Teachers) College, where she majored in Rural School Teaching.  She taught the Taylor School and, with her husband, farmed and had a dairy operation.

LaVerne was united in marriage to Milo George Barton on May 14, 1949. Their union was blessed by six children.  They made their home on a farm in Ordway, SD until Milo’s death on March 18, 1998.  She then resided with her daughter in Ellendale and at Prince of Peace Care Center.

In her spare time, LaVerne enjoyed her large family (who will miss her dearly), yard sales, auctions, and trips to casinos with family.

She is survived by her children: Denise (Doug) Miller of Nemo, SD, Valerie (Donald Leach) Barton of Heathsville, VA, Stuart (Janet) Barton of Aberdeen, Brent (JoBeth) Barton of Mobridge, SD and Karman Furman of Ellendale, ND; her brothers: Orville Lerew of Faulkton, SD, Wilbur Lerew of Miller, SD and Vernon Lerew of Loomis, SD; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life.

Laverne was preceded in death by her husband, Milo; her son, Michael; her son-in-law, Russell Furman; her parents, Bert and Marie Lerew; her brother, Theodore Lerew; and sisters: Jane Lerew, Rose Maurer and Edna Mae Lerew.

The family is extremely grateful for the loving and professional care given to LaVerne from the very special staff at Prince of Peace Care Center.
